Most people choose brick cladding by colour first. Size matters just as much. The same red clay looks traditional in one size and modern in another, because the size decides how many joint lines run across the wall.
We make red brick cladding in five sizes at our factory in Kakkar Majra, Ambala. Here is what each one does on a wall.
The five brick cladding sizes we make
9" × 3" × 20 mm: the full brick look
This is the proportion of a standard brick, so a wall clad in 9×3 tiles looks like a real exposed brick wall. It also covers the most area per tile, which means fewer joints to grout and a faster job for your tiler. Use it for full house elevations, boundary walls and large commercial fronts.
Available in smooth terracotta and brown, and in textured red, brown, linen red, rough brown and dual tone.
9" × 2" × 20 mm: for smaller walls
On a 10-foot living room wall, 9×3 bricks can look a bit large. The 9×2 tile keeps the same length but adds more courses, so the wall reads finer from up close. It suits TV walls, staircase walls and balcony walls in apartments.
9" × 1.5" × 20 mm: long and slim
The slim tile gives strong horizontal lines, similar to the Roman brick look used in modern architecture. Architects pick it for cafes, offices and contemporary house fronts. It takes longer to install because there are twice as many courses as 9×3, so budget a little more labour.
9" × 3" × 30 mm and 6" × 3" × 25 mm: handmade
Our handmade tiles are thicker. The extra depth throws a deeper shadow at each joint, so the wall looks heavier and older. The 6×3 size is close to the small bricks seen in old havelis and colonial buildings.
How to choose in one minute
- Big exterior wall or full elevation: 9×3.
- Interior wall under 12 feet wide: 9×2 or 9×1.5.
- Modern, horizontal look: 9×1.5.
- Heritage or rustic look: handmade 9×3 or 6×3.
A note on joints
Joint width changes the look as much as tile size. An 8–10 mm joint in light grey grout is the most common choice. A thinner, darker joint makes the wall look more uniform. Ask for a sample box and lay a few tiles on the floor with spacers before you decide.
